It has strong associations with Florence Nightingale, who was sister-in-law to Sir Harry Verney. She was a regular visitor to the house, which contains many of her personal belongings. The house was given to the National Trust in 1956 by Sir Ralph Verney, 5th Baronet. His son, Sir Edmund Verney, 6th Baronet, a former High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, lives in the house today
Claydon House is set within 21 hectares (52 acres) of unspoilt parkland with far-reaching views and lakeside walks. There over three miles of path walkways surrounding the lakes. The courtyard contains small workshops and galleries, as well as a popular restaurant and tea-room. The private gardens are open to visitors at an additional charge.
The house is open everyday except for Thursdays and Fridays. There are guided tours of the house and gardens. During the year there are also various special events such as an annual hovercraft race as well as family friendly days. You can come for a picnic or go for a walk in the surrounding countryside. The grounds also house an impressive chapel.
